HMONG MISSIONS UPDATE By Yia Vang
The following is a recent progress report of Hmong mission work in Wisconsin and beyond by Rev. Yia Vang, CAME’s Assistant Hmong Ministry Facilitator: Each Sunday at 4:00 PM, two new Hmong mission leaders—Chia Yang and Moua Vang come to a two hour class at Benediction Lutheran Church in Milwaukee. They come to be trained and taught by Vicar Blong Vang and me about the ministry and to prepare them for the Ethnic Immigrant Institute of Theology (EIIT) program in 2006. They are being taught and trained on how to administer the Lord’s Supper, Baptism, lead worship services, write sermons, delivery of sermons, how to leader prayer, how to do evangelism, memorize the books of the Bible, know the Six Chief parts of Luther’s Small Catechism, understand pastoral responsibilities, how to relate to the congregation and community, how to distinguish Law from Gospel, how to teach Bible classes and the basic Lutheran doctrines. When I have completed this training, the potential leaders will be turned over to the appropriate LCMS district to be interviewed for the EIIT program. Then they will be commissioned to begin conducting ministry while continuing their education toward becoming pastors in the LCMS. Chia Yang has been interviewed by the North Wisconsin District and was accepted into the EIIT program, but he is being delayed until the fall of 2006 because he needs to take three classes as a prerequisite for the EIIT program at Concordia University, Mequon, WI. Moua Vang still needs to be interviewed by the District. Please pray for more Hmong leaders so that more ministries can be planted. In addition, we intend to make 1,000 cassette copies on Lutheran doctrines and why it would be great for the Hmong people to come to faith in Christ. We also plan to duplicate 1,000 Gospel outreach brochures to send to 1,000 Hmong families in various Wisconsin cities—Sheboygan, Madison, La Crosse and Wisconsin Rapids between December 2005 and May of 2006. Also, the Green Bay (Wisconsin) Hmong Lutheran Ministry is excited to share that on December 4, 2005 the North Wisconsin District will charter the ministry in Green Bay as the fourth-chartered Hmong congregation in the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod. President Arleigh Lutz of the North Wisconsin District, LCMS will be the guest preacher and officiant of the charter service. The service will begin at 1:00 PM. Guests and friends are invited to join this special service. Lunch will be provided after the service. For more information regarding the progress in Hmong missions, please go to www.hmonglcms.org, a new website which CAME is helping to sponsor. Significant progress has also been made overseas in Thailand among the Hmong in Paklang and Chiang Mai. A number of mission sites have been planted and 105 new Christians have been baptized. Stayed tuned for an update in our upcoming Lenten issue of Building Bridges.
